Oktapodi

Updated December 23, 2017

Oktapodi was nominated for Best Animated Short at the 2009 Academy Awards. It is a French short film about a pair of love-struck octopuses who are separated and find each other again through a series of comical events. It is great to use around Valentine’s Day and for targeting structures in the preterite tense. Click here to learn more about the basics of MovieTalk.

Resources for Oktapodi

  • Martina Bex included Oktapodi in Unit 2 of her Spanish 2 Somos Curriculum. The unit targets -AR regular preterite verbs, and specifically the structures vio que había, se acercó a, and se lo llevó. You might follow the unit with her -AR regular preterite notes if you have to teach explicit grammar.
  • Susann Shultz posted a PowerPoint and listening assessment in Spanish for Oktapodi.
  • On Teachers Pay Teachers, Elena López posted a Spanish script in past tense for the MovieTalk, a photo collage, and a sentence matching activity.
  • Miriam Patrick wrote a script for Oktapodi in Latin. My favorite part of her lesson is that she was able to connect it to Latin culture through one of Pliny’s legends.
  • This teacher does not understand MovieTalk or the principles of comprehensible input. However, if you are a Spanish teacher who teaches grammar explicitly, Caroline Elliott-Janvier has some grammar and output activities available.
